Stegberg htu. Elderly people who have retired do not have the same opportunities as younger people to learn about and use IT or the Internet. We have created a short introduction course about IT. The course is an interdisciplinary collaborative project involving both the pedagogic and informatic disciplines. The course is based on theories about problem-based learning PBL.

One aim is to make the participants feel inspired to continue learning on their own after the completion of the course. Six elderly people volunteered to participate and they took the course for a period of three weeks.

When we analysed the results of our study we discovered three themes that represent the participants change of attitudes about IT. Our results and discussions are based on those three themes - the fear of the challenge, from being curious to gaining self-fulfilment and from feeling left out to approaching a sense of belonging. The participants were very enthusiastic about the results and the knowledge they had obtained.

PBL theories are a good method for learning. We also consider that for participants to be able to learn new things and grasp a hold of knowledge, they must be allowed to try and to make mistakes in order to be able to understand. In Scandinavia participatory design PD is a method used for developing systems together with users. Introduction The article is a result of an interdisciplinary project between researchers from the disciplines of pedagogics and informatics.

Our experiences from computer-education, both as participants and teachers, are that expositions are well-structured but that very little encouragement is given to individual thought. In modern journalsfor example the journal Computer Sweden Utbildningsguidethere is a recognition of a lack of pedagogy in computer courses.

Distance-education and online courses gained more space. Often courses have a technical orientation which precludes any opportunity of being able Proceedings of IRIS Laboratorium for Interaction Technology, University of Trollh?

Problem based learning PBL is a pedagogical method, which encourages students in their search for knowledge. It is the participants and their interests, wishes and experiences that characterise the learning process. Linkoping Studies in Education and Psychology, No. Data Decisions Group, Inc. Data were gathered by interviewing r. Interviews were analyzed according to a phenomenographic approach and using the principles of contextual analysis.

The study found that while there was some variation in students 1 perceptions of the concepts of health, movement, and function, the most common perspectives after completing formal education were holistic or mixed; this pattern remained most common also after 18 months of professional work. Students ' perceptions of the concept of interaction were divided into four categories of communicative and problem-solving approaches: two integrated styles, mutuality and technicalism, which are respectively patient- centered and physiotherapist-centered; and two separated styles, authority and juxtaposition, which are respectively physiotherapist-centered and patient-centered.

Both integrated and separated perspectives were reported after completion of formal education; after 18 months of professional practice, however, the dominant style became mutuality, the integrated patient- centered approach. The student-interview guide is appended. Contains references. The investigation focuses on the students' ways of experiencing the concepts of Health, Movement, Function and Interaction.

Two groups of physiotherapy students at the Faculty of Health Sciences in Linkoping, Sweden, were interviewed on two occasions respectively. The interviews were carried during the second and last term of the formal programme and after 18 months of profes- sional experience. Data were analysed according to the phenomenographic approach and to the principles of contextual analysis. The students' conceptions varied qualita- tively, but an analysis of the internal relationships between the concepts revealed that the most common perspectives after completing the formal education were con- sistently holistic or mixed.

This pattern was also most common after 18 months of pro- fessional work. The subjects' ways of experiencing the Interaction within a patient en- counter were described in four main categories; Mutuality, Technicalism, Authority and Juxtaposition. Mutuality and Technicalism denoted an integration of the commu- nicative and problem-solving processes, the former category from a patient-centred and the latter from a physiotherapist-centred perspective. Authority and Juxtaposition denoted a separation of the processes, the former from a physiotherapist-centred perspective and the latter from a patient-centred perspective.

Both separated and integrated perspectives were common after completing the formal education. After 18 months of professional practice the Mutuality category dominated. My ideas about the destination of the journey were from the beginning high-flying, optimistic and not very clearly defined.Colorectal cancer CRC is one of the most common cancer diseases in the world after lung and female breast cancer and approximately new cases are diagnosed every year. CRC is caused by genetic alterations in the DNA, which results in cell cycle acceleration, escape from apoptosis, senescence, angiogenesis, invasion and metastasis.

The hypoxia inducible factor HIF -la protein is involved in the oxygen sensing mechanism and several tumor types show HIF-la overexpression due to hypoxia. At normoxia, HIF-la is degraded by interaction with the von Hippel-Lindau VHL tumor suppressor protein followed by an ubiquitin-proteasome dependent degradation mechanism, which prevents HIF-l a from nuclear translocation and transcription of downstream target genes. In the present study, the polymorphism was associated to ulcerative tumor development.

In addition, loss of heterozygosity of the wild type P allele in heterozygotes may contribute to the development of ulcerative CRCs.

However, the overall mechanism for ulcerative tumor development is still unclear. Nitric oxide NO is involved in several physiological processes, such as apoptosis, neurotransmission, angiogenesis and immune defence and is produced by three nitric oxide synthases; NOSl We also investigated whether polymorphisms in the NOS2 promoter affected the onset of CRC, but no differences in allele or genotype frequencies were observed in normal healthy population compared to CRC patients.

Colorectal cancer is a multi-step process characterized by a sequence of genetic alterations in cell growth regulatory genes, such as the adenomatous polyposis coliKRASp53 and DCC genes.

One novel somatic mutation was also identified in the BRAF gene. In agreement with others, a statistically significant correlation between BRAF mutations and microsatellite instability could be found. A negative correlation was also evident between mutations in the BRAF and KRAS genes, which supports earlier studies where somatic mutations in these genes are mutually exclusive. Collectively, our results provide support for the idea that activation of the MAP kinase pathway, especially via BRAF and KRAS mutations, is of critical importance for the development of colorectal cancer.

However, the role for these polymorphisms in vivo is still unclear. The inducible nitric NO synthase 2 NOS2 is upregulated in breast, brain, colon, and gynecological tumors, which indicate that NO may have a role in tumorigenesis.

However, little is known about the role and regulation of NOS2 in colorectal carcinomas. Recent in vitro experiments have implicated that NOS2 is downregulated by p53 accumulation. Presence of NOS2 protein was studied by Western blot, and the localization was studied by immunohistochemistry. Loss of heterozygosity was studied in the region of the NOS2 gene. Immunohistochemistry revealed extensive NOS2 staining in the epithelial cells and, to a minor degree, in leukocytes.

Inactivating mutations in the p53 and APC pathways are not the main explanation for the increased NOS2 expression found in colorectal tumors.

In conclusion, these results, therefore, suggest that NOS2 promoter polymorphisms have a limited effect on the onset or progression of CRC. Nitric oxide synthase 2 NOS2 expression has been found in several different tumor types, including colorectal cancers, but the role of NOS2 expression for cancer development is not fully understood. No significant difference was found between the different mouse groups regarding the expression of p Collectively, NOS2 expression is a protective factor in intestinal polyposis, but its role in polyp development is still unclear.

Wideband absorbance WBA is a WAI tool that distinguishes normally-hearing from pathological middle ears with a high level of diagnostic accuracy. This work aims to further improve the diagnostic efficiency of WBA, by providing a set of normative data which represents the typical inter-aural difference of WBA in adults of Caucasian, Asian and Mixed ethnicities. Norms were established for individual ear measures, and the inter-aural difference of WBA measured within-subjects.

A comparison of the diagnostic efficacy of the two WBA measurements was conducted with an ROC analysis, using WBA records from 28 subjects with surgically confirmed otosclerosis as a clinical group. Results: The ROC analysis confirmed that diagnostic accuracy of WBA individual ear and inter-aural difference measures was equal for the detection of otosclerosis; however, these measurements may provide complementary information regarding middle ear status.

WBA norms based on individual ear data varied significantly depending on ethnicity, gender, and test pressurization method across frequencies. WBA norms based on inter-aural difference values only varied significantly with test pressurization method across frequencies, though the difference was small and likely does not have any clinical relevance, at least for the detection of otosclerosis.

Parameterization of norms for individual ear WBA data is recommended based on ethnicity, gender and test pressurization method. Inter-aural difference norms for WBA may be instrumental in interpreting immittance results for individuals with unilateral conductive pathology, or for populations for which other forms of normative data are not available. The purpose of this test is to differentiate ears with normal middle ear structures, and ears with abnormalities that might cause conductive hearing loss.

There is a high level of individual variability in WBA measures, partially due to factors of ethnicity and gender, as well as the test pressurization method used during the measurement.

Using norms specific to these parameters has resulted in better test accuracy of WBA. Researchers have therefore suggested that further investigation into normative measures of WBA is valuable for the development of this tool. This study looks at the sources of variability in two types of normative WBA measures; it also compares the diagnostic accuracy of WBA for detecting a common middle ear disease, otosclerosis, when either type of norm is used.
